2 Reviews of the Frinton 3

This is the best tent I have ever owned. It is easy to put up on your own and the sturdy poles keep rustling in wind to a minimum. Plenty of room in the sitting area for rainy days and with windows and doors on all 4 sides it never feels claustrophobic.

I have used it in heavy storms and had no leaks. It is particularly good in hot sunny weather: if you position it with the sleeping compartment to the west it doesn't get too hot or light allowing sleeping in and the combination of tent height and little porch means there is always shade to sit in.

On the downside the window shade is outside and SIG does come up meaning that you have to step over it to get through the doors but those are the only features preventing a score of 10.

I have read the previous review but have had none of those problems and suspect Bubobubo unfortunately got a faulty model.

Invested in the Frinton 3, assuming it would be the same as the 4 but smaller. But I think I could write a book. However, briefly.Believe it or not.

Good points:

-size and shape, both of sleeping and living areas

-lots of light in the living area for those nasty weather days

-overall quality of the material used for the tent itself, as they say, feel the difference.

-good zips, both for luminosity and for visibility

-darkened sleeping area, helps but doesn't do magic in campsites that don't switch off their lights at night.

-little canopy over the side door, helps to keep the rain from trickling into the tent and/or down your neck

-plenty of pockets for storage of those little lightweight things that so easily get misplaced otherwise

Bad points:

-pitching.It never seems to 'sit' quite right as the SIG seems to raise itself up off the ground before it gets to the sides. We've tried adjusting the straps all ways, but nothing helps

-the rigid poles appear to be a bit too long and the pins are long and quite difficult to insert, especially if you're battling to hold the tent up in place in windy/wet weather

-the inner could do with a few more 'anchor points' as it seems to fall in on itself, rather than sit where it should

And the REALLY BAD points, which may be specific to our tent (and which we only noticed AFTER the 'test-drive' pitching at home:

-the end of one of the adjustable straps was accidentally sewn in between the flysheet and the groundsheet, and we had to cut it out and wrap the end up in duct tape to stop it from fraying

-there were two rows of stitch holes, but no thread, IN THE GROUNDSHEET in the area at the side of the sleeping pod. It looked like an overzealous machinist had gone off the map.

-there is also a 6 inch section of seam in the living area, just next to the window, which not only hasn't been sealed but in fact HAS NO STITCHES.The thread is hanging to the side. Again, duct tape came to our rescue, but we had to seal it from the outside as an emergency measure, as it was impossible to get properly at from the inside

To be fair to the tent, we have suffered winds, rain, hailstone and four hours of non-stop torrential rain with the Frinton. And yes, it leaked unsurprisingly, given the manufacturing faults it has, but it could have been a lot worse. All the leaks were containable and hopefully, repairable (we shall see on our next attempt to feel some love for this tent). It was most important to get the tension right as pools of water gathered in the skylight panel and once it started to leak during the torrential rain, but generally it held up well and even in the wind. Once of the rigid poles has bent slightly from having to put strain on a lower one to insert the pin.

After our first trip with the Frinton 3, when we saw the overzealous sewing in the groundsheet and the problem with the adjustable strap, we emailed Kampa to say that we thought they needed to redesign the sleeping area with a few more anchor points, and we told them the problems we'd found with our particular tent regarding their quality control. They replied quickly, saying they'd pass on our design suggestion to the design department but they completely ignored the other problems.

My conclusion?

A potentially superb tent, marred by major flaws in quality control. And the fact that we find it so difficult to pitch.
